Our projects

Sports recovery centre (Newport)

Our architectural practice had the privilege of collaborating with Leeds Beckett University's School of Built Environment, Engineering, and Computing on a project initiated by The Royal British Legion (TRBL). The objective was to develop concept ideas for a new building for The Battleback Centre in Newport, utilising an existing site.

In partnership with the University, a team of LBU Architectural Technology alumni, including the partners from MH+A, and the then final-year Architectural Technology students, joined forces to assist in the project. This collaborative approach brought together a diverse range of expertise and fresh perspectives, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of design possibilities.

The first step in the process was conducting a feasibility study, evaluating the existing site and its potential for accommodating the new building. This involved in-depth analysis and discussions to identify the optimal design solutions that aligned with the vision and requirements of The Battleback Centre.

Once the feasibility study was complete, our team created a detailed walk-through of the proposed design, allowing the clients to visualise the concept and understand the spatial layout. This presentation was a crucial step in garnering support from stakeholders, including Sport England, who provided the necessary funding for the new build.

The successful collaboration between Leeds Beckett University, our architectural practice, and The Royal British Legion resulted in a well-received proposal that secured the funding needed for the construction of a new building. This achievement reflects the effectiveness of our collective efforts, combining academic knowledge, industry experience, and innovative thinking.

We are proud to have contributed to a project that supports the important work of The Battleback Centre, which provides vital rehabilitation and support for injured service personnel. The new building will create an enhanced environment that fosters physical and emotional healing, while also accommodating the unique requirements of its users.

At our architectural practice, we value collaboration and innovative design solutions. This project exemplifies our commitment to working in partnership with academic institutions, clients, and stakeholders to achieve outstanding results.

Residential extension (York)

Our architectural practice successfully completed a project that involved the design and construction of an L-shaped ground floor extension and a rear first-floor extension. The primary goal was to maximize the potential of the property, providing our client with additional space and enhancing the overall functionality and aesthetics of their home.

Throughout the project, we engaged in intense discussions with the local planning authority to ensure compliance with all regulations and obtain full planning permission. Our team worked closely with the authorities to address any concerns and create a design that seamlessly integrated with the existing structure and surroundings.

The end result was not only the successful acquisition of planning permission but also a design that met and exceeded our client's expectations. They were delighted with the final appearance of the build, which harmoniously blended with the existing architecture while adding a modern touch.

We approached the project with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that the extensions seamlessly connected with the existing layout and enhanced the flow of the property. By collaborating closely with the clients throughout the process, we were able to capture their vision and translate it into a functional and visually stunning reality.

The L-shaped ground floor extension provided ample additional living space, expanding the possibilities for family gatherings, entertainment, and everyday activities. Meanwhile, the rear first-floor extension maximized the available area by adding extra rooms, creating a more versatile and spacious environment for the client.

Barn conversion (Selby)

At our architectural practice, we successfully undertook a project to convert an existing horse barn into a modern, sustainable home for our clients. The unique challenge involved not only transforming the barn into a comfortable living space but also facilitating the sale of their existing property on the site. Our approach was to retain as much of the original stables as possible while extending the front of the building to accommodate the desired residential features.

Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with structural engineers and the local authority to design a sustainable residential property that would meet the demands of the 21st century. Our team integrated sustainable design principles and practices to create an environmentally conscious dwelling that maximized energy efficiency and minimized its carbon footprint.

Preserving the historic character and charm of the original barn was a top priority. By working closely with our clients, we developed a design that respected the barn's heritage while introducing contemporary elements to ensure a comfortable and functional living space. The conversion seamlessly blended the rustic charm of the existing structure with modern amenities and finishes.

In addition to the residential conversion, the project included the construction of a new stable for our clients' horses. We carefully considered the needs and well-being of the animals, creating a safe and comfortable environment for them.

Furthermore, we incorporated a garage into the design, which provided storage space for a wood pellet boiler. This sustainable heating system not only reduced the property's reliance on fossil fuels but also contributed to the overall energy efficiency and sustainability of the project.

Residential extension (Leeds)

Our architectural practice successfully completed a project that involved the extension of a client's property to the rear, with the goal of creating an open-plan living space and improved accessibility.

Our team worked closely with the client to understand her specific requirements and to develop a design that would enhance her quality of life. The primary objective was to create a spacious and seamless transition between the existing living area and the rear garden, allowing for easy access and an abundance of natural light.

Throughout the project, our team paid close attention to the finer details, ensuring that every aspect of the design catered to the client's specific requirements. By considering future planning for the client's changing health, we created a space that can easily adapt and accommodate any future needs, providing long-term functionality and comfort.

Ultimately, the client was extremely pleased with the final result. The open-plan living space seamlessly connects to the rear garden and provides a spacious and inviting environment that enhances both accessibility and natural light.

Residential extension (Leeds)

In the current climate, many clients approach our architectural practice seeking to extend their existing properties. One such client wanted to utilise their loft space to create additional living space. Our team collaborated closely with the client to design and construct a dormer extension that would maximise the available space while causing minimal disruption to the family living within the property.

Understanding the importance of maintaining a comfortable and functional living environment during the construction process, we prioritized minimizing disturbance to the family. We worked meticulously to ensure that the project progressed smoothly, minimising any inconveniences caused by the construction work.

Our design approach focused on optimising the loft space through the addition of a dormer extension. This allowed us to create a well-designed and spacious area that met the client's requirements for additional living space. The dormer extension was carefully integrated with the existing architectural elements, ensuring a seamless blend between the original structure and the new addition.

Residential extension (Leeds)

Our architectural practice took on an exciting project that involved the complete transformation of a run-down 2-bedroom semi-detached property into a spacious and modern family home. The client's vision was to create a larger living space by extending the property. Our design solution included an L-shaped ground floor extension, a first-floor extension to the rear with a new ensuite for the master bedroom, and a rear dormer.

The primary objective was to convert the existing property into a 5-bedroom house with an open-plan and contemporary living layout. Our team worked closely with the client to understand their needs and aspirations, and to create a design that would fulfill their vision.

The ground floor extension took the form of an L-shape, effectively expanding the living space and providing ample room for family activities and gatherings. This extension seamlessly integrated with the existing structure, ensuring a harmonious flow between the original building and the new addition.

On the first floor, a rear extension was added, resulting in a new ensuite for the master bedroom. This not only enhanced the functionality of the property but also added a touch of luxury and convenience for the homeowners. Additionally, a rear dormer was incorporated to maximize the available space, allowing for additional headroom and natural light.

The end result of our design and construction efforts was the successful transformation of the property into a modern and spacious family home. The integration of the extensions, alongside an open-plan living layout, created a harmonious and versatile environment that perfectly met the client's desires.

At our architectural practice, we take pride in our ability to turn clients' dreams into reality. This project showcases our expertise in maximizing space and creating functional designs that enhance the livability and aesthetic appeal of a property.

Sleeping pods

Sleeping pods, designed with simplicity in mind, can comfortably host a limited number of guests simultaneously. Each pod encompasses designated sleeping areas and convenient wash facilities. The choice of materials for constructing these pods centres around locally sourced cork and concrete. Notably, an ingenious feature of these pods is their ability to harness rainfall from the roof, channelling it into a reservoir positioned adjacent to the pod entrance. This captured water is then employed to nourish the forest slopes below through an irrigation system. By prioritising environmental consciousness, we have emphasized low carbon footprint and sustainability throughout the construction and operation of these pods.
